Itinerary
  • Day 1

    Welcome to S. Miguel

In your arrival at Ponta Delgada airport, our driver will give you a warm welcome and will take you to your Hotel. Check-in and accommodation in S. Miguel.

  • Day 2

City Tour & Lagoa do Fogo

    Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

Visit on foot to the centre of Ponta Delgada, with special interest in: São Francisco Square and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Esperança (Our Lady of Hope), home of the image of Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres (our Lord of Miracles), responsible for one of the largest religious festivities in Portugal, Conceição’s Palace exterior façade (Palace of the Presidency of the Azores Regional Government), Parish Church of São Sebastião, Portas da Cidade (city gates), Sacred Art Centre of the Carlos Machado Museum, Mercado da Graça (local market) and the Church of São Pedro.

This wonderful tour combines some off the road routes in both the highlands and flatlands, taking you to the amazing natural reserve of Lagoa do Fogo to enjoy nature at its best. Astonishing views from the top of the crater’s border are a must to photograph! We then drive you to Caldeira Velha, a warm iron-rich waterfall where you can go for a dip to experience its warm waters.

    Accommodation in S. Miguel.

NOTE: Whenever a visit is not possible to fulfill due to monument closure it will be – when possible – replaced by other.

  • Day 3

Gruta do Carvão + Pineapple Plantations / Whale Watching

    Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

We start our tour with a visit to Gruta do Carvão (Coal Cave). Located on the western side of the city of Ponta Delgada, this lava tunnel currently extends for about 2000 meters, spread over three main cavities and intermediate areas which have already collapsed and blocked the access to the primitive lava tube. According to old documents and field observations this lava tube may have originally reached a length of 5km. After visiting the cave we continue our tour with a visit to the pineapple plantations. Did you know that this exotic fruit takes almost two years until it is ready to be served on your table?

    Free time for lunch.

In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to watch some of the 25 cetacean species that can be found in the Azores. Although nature offers no guarantees, whales and dolphins are regularly seen during our half day tours, along with turtles, seabirds and other marine life. Before the boat trip our biologists give you a briefing to explain which cetacean species can be observed, safety measures aboard, how we respect the animals and rules of observation at sea as well as some historical facts. During the tour each passenger is required to wear a life vest (except on our catamaran). We also provide rain coats and trousers if necessary.

    Accommodation in S. Miguel.

  • Day 4

    Furnas

    Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

On this tour we feel and experience the volcanic origins of the Island in Furnas, a magical place. We start by visiting the Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas (Furnas Lake Calderas), a place where we cook the famous “cozido das Furnas” (a very special meal cooked only with the steam of the Earth) and continue with a soft walk that crosses a stream and circles the lakeside. During this walk we have the opportunity to appreciate a variety of endemic flora species. Next we visit the town of Furnas, with its fumaroles and mineral springs that contain water with different tastes. The Cozido meal is served in a local restaurant. After lunch we visit the centenary Terra Nostra botanical garden that is famous for its extraordinary collection of native plants on the Azores, as well as others from all over the world that have adapted to the local garden conditions. At the end of the visit you are invited to bathe in an iron-rich hot water swimming pool that has a temperature of 35-40ºC, an exquisite experience! On the way back to Ponta Delgada we stop at several beautiful viewpoints on the North Coast and also at the only tea plantation in Europe where we will be able to visit the working tea factory and have a lovely break to taste the tea.

Lunch in a local restaurant: "Cozido" meal.

    Accommodation in S. Miguel.

  • Day 5

    Jeep Safari 5 Senses

    Breakfast buffet at the hotel.

On this tour, on the way to Sete Cidades we take several off road tracks which are used by local farmers. These roads pass by several spots that are only accessible by 4x4 and should not be missed as they offer some outstanding views that usually are not included in the regular tours. Stops in Pico do Carvão, Empadadas lakes, and Vista do Rei (the famous King's viewpoint) are included. After this adventurous and fun ride we have lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch we emerge in a "back to the past" activity. We will bake fresh bread and biscuits, milk a cow, plough the earth and participate in traditional activities and games. This is a fun-filled day that is perfect for anybody wanting to connect with nature and with the island’s local traditions.
